Daniel joined the Value Based Health Care team in September 2017 when the Programme was still maturing. He provides overall programme management and advice to all key stakeholders of the Value Based Health Care Programme in Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and also represents the Health Board at various National forums. He works directly to the Associate Director for Value and Assistant Medical Directors for Value at ABUHB and is responsible for ensuring that the programme is managed and delivered through recognised project and programme management methodologies and ensures that governance arrangements to support the programme are in place. He is a qualified practitioner of MSP (Managing Successful Programmes), PRINCE2 and ITIL (IT Service Management).

Daniel has worked in the NHS and public sector in Wales for 17 years and has vast experience of implementing large scale change and improvement programmes across many aspects of the health care system, including managing the successful delivery of two European programmes; CareWell and MasterMind whist in a previous role with Powys Teaching Health Board . He has studied Business Information Technology at the University of Wales Newport and has a digital and technology background. He has experience in design, development and implementation of digital enablers and technology at a local, European and national scale.

Andrew Latimer

Andrew is a Registered Associate Nutritionist (ANutr) with the AfN, and holds an MSc in Physical Activity, Nutrition and Health Promotion, and a BSc in Applied Sports Science. Andrew has a background of working in weight management, and enjoys helping people with overcoming their obstacles, and creating a platform for people to make positive, healthy changes in their lives. Andrew has worked for Roche for 6 months in the role as a Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach on the digital health app OurPath.

Natasha Gilbody

Natasha is a Registered Associate Nutritionist with the AfN with a Masters in Nutrition, BSc in Physical Activity, health and Exercise and a background in weight management. Natasha has worked for Roche for 6 months in the role as a Nutritionist and Health Coach on the digital health app OurPath. As a Health coach Natasha is passionate about supporting people to make positive changes to their lifestyle, eating habits and physical activity.

Paul Fisk
Patient Representative,

Born in Nottingham in, 1945.  Paul started work in local government 1962, spending his career there up until retirement in 2001, taking this so he could enjoy life. He moved to Wales in 2011 and his joys are singing, traveling, eating, drinking and his wife Janet who he married in 2013.

Paul was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in August 2017 and commenced treatment in March 2019.  Paul’s treatment is going well, with the results of his treatment looking positive

Born in Swansea in 1957. Wayne trained as a Mechanical Engineer with British Steel in 1974 before moving into speciality industrial sales and latterly running a group of oil distribution depots in West Wales.

He was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer in 2014 and forced to retire due to ill health at the end of 2016.

His main hobby is photography and he enjoys visiting art galleries and European cities. He has been married to Dianne, who is also a cancer patient, for 37 years, they have two grown up children.

Anthony Meyerstone

Anthony Meyerstone has held a variety of Pharmaceutical management roles mainly within the commercial space for large healthcare organisations specialising in Oncology and Immunotherapy. He is currently heading up the Commercial efforts for Healthy IO as the Medical Selfie which provides clinically approved home urinalysis.  He has a BA (Hons) degree in Business and Economics along with a Pharmacology degree. His areas of interests are within business, people management and charity projects relating to the community. Anthony has held several voluntary positions including Chairman of Leeds University JSOC, Trustee of JVN and Governor of Etz Chaim Primary School.

Professor of Molecular Medicine, Swansea University Medical School

Deya Gonzalez’s research focuses on biomarkers discovery and translational medicine in the areas of female infertility and gynaecological cancers.She has applied her expertise in inflammation, angiogenesis, vascular permeability, reproductive biology and cell to cell interactions to develop multicellular 3D models for use as tools in biomarker discovery and drug development. Her projects involve collaborations with the private sector to expedite validation of clinical diagnostic biomarkers and the development of new drug leads for targeted cancer therapy including Antibody Drug Conjugates and Exosomes. She is a Co-PI of the Smart Expertise project CEAT-Cluster for Epigenomics and ADC therapeutics (£2.6M), where she leads the ADC programme.

Emma Brodrick
Systems Application Manager, Imspex

Emma Brodrick is the Systems Application Manager for IMSPEX Diagnostics based in South Wales. Using gas chromatography – ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) their devices have a wide range of applications including those for health and life sciences.

Emma has extensive analytical and clinical experience in the translation of GC-IMS technology from the laboratory into the clinical setting. She is currently the Project Co-Ordinator for the Breathspec Project – a H2020 funded project in the fight against antimicrobial resistance via improved antibiotic stewardship using breath analysis for bacterial v viral respiratory tract infections.

Santi is a business graduate from the University of Santiago de Compostela, in Spain, and has a 25 year track record as a business manager and entrepreneur in the life science analytics field. Steve Conlan

Steve is Head of Enterprise and Innovation at Swansea University Medical School, Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology, and head of the School’s Reproductive Biology and Gynaecological Oncology group.

He is Strategic Director of the Celtic Advanced Life Science Innovation Network (CALIN), with partners in Bangor, Cardiff, University College Dublin, National University Galway, University College Cork, and SMEs across Ireland and Wales.

His personal research and innovation activities focus developing advanced therapeutics (Antibody Drug Conjugates, exosomes, and nanoparticle deliver systems) for endometrial and ovarian cancer treatments, deciphering the epigenetic processes underlying these and other diseases, and developing new diagnostic tests to detect diseases and to personalise treatments. He currently leads industry facing R&D projects with partners including Axis Bioservices, Bruker, GSK, GE Healthcare, Ig Innovations (part of the Abbott group), Porvair, and ReNeuron, and works in partnership with clinicians across the NHS in Wales.

Jing Ouyang

Dr. Jing Ouyang is an NHS doctor, clinical entrepreneur fellow and current Chief Operating Officer for Patchwork Health. He was previously the clinical lead for digital health at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and the Chief Medical Officer for Nova, a digital product design company. He was a clinical advisor for Aergo, a medical device company providing postural seating devices for children in wheelchairs.

Cynthia Bullock

Paul Thomas

Paul has studied trace VOC analysis since 1984 and has been working in biogenic VOC determination (breath, skin and saliva) since 2002. He is a past president of the International Society of Ion Mobility Spectrometry and the current secretary to the International Association of Breath Research. This year he is the host of the breath research summit (https://ember.le.ac.uk/iabr/ where everyone is welcome to come to learn about the latest developments in breath analysis and research) and is presently working as a project co-ordinator for H2020 TOXI-triage and work stream leader for MRC Ember.

James Covington
Professor in Electronic Engineering, School of Engineering, University of Warwick

James Covington is a Professor in Electronic Engineering within the School of Engineering at Warwick University. He has spent his academic career developing chemical and biological sensors for detecting a variety of environmental pollutants and biological agents, applying a wide range of electronic and MEMS techniques in the development of these novel sensors. He setup the Biomedical Sensors Laboratory in 2010, at Warwick University to apply gas analysis techniques to the medical arena. This dedicated facility is focussed in the analysis of potential gas phase biomarkers that emanate from human waste (breath, urine, stool, sweat and skin). The group has looked at a number of different disease groups, including irritable bowel disease, skin/colorectal/bladder/pancreatic cancer, Coeliac’s disease, bile acid malabsorption, diabetes and tuberculosis – and many more. He has received funding from the EU, MRC, NIHR, industry and many charities. He is also the current president for the International Society of Chemical Sensors (ISOCS).

Gwyn Tudor
CEO, MediWales

As CEO of Mediwales for nearly 16 years, Gwyn has overseen a transformation of the forum to its current size, influence and corporate structure. Gwyn works with the directors and members of MediWales to develop the forum’s future strategic direction. His in-depth knowledge of the life science sector allows him to represent MediWales’ members’ interests on a number of Welsh and UK government panels and boards.

Gwyn’s career has developed over twenty years from being a front line product designer working in a number of sectors, including the development of medical devices, to his current managerial role.

Professor Sir Mansel Aylward
Chair, Life Sciences Hub Wales

Sir Mansel is Chair of Life Sciences Hub Wales.  He is also Chair of the Bevan Commission, an independent expert panel to oversee NHS reforms in Wales and to provide expert advice to the Minister for Health and Social Services. He is Professor of Public Health Education at the Centre for Psychosocial and Disability Research at Cardiff University. He was recently appointed as Professor of Prudent Health and Wellbeing at the School of Management, Swansea University.

He was the first Chair of Public Health Wales NHS Trust, responsible for the delivery of public health services at national, local and community levels in Wales. He was a panel member of the Parliamentary Review of Health and Social Services in Wales.  Earlier in his career he was Chief Medical Officer, Medical Director and Chief Scientist at the Department for Work and Pensions in London.

He was knighted in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours 2010 for services to health and healthcare. In 2016, he was elected to fellowship of the Learned Society of Wales.

Andrew Goodall
Director General of Health and Social Services and Chief Executive, NHS Wales

Dr Andrew Goodall was appointed to the role of Director General of Health and Social Services/Chief Executive NHS Wales in June 2014. His role includes both supporting Ministerial priorities for health and social care within the Civil Service structures, and the leadership and oversight of NHS Wales.

Including this current role, Andrew has been an NHS Chief Executive in Wales for 11 years, the most recent post being that of Chief Executive of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, a position held since the Health Board’s inception in October 2009 until 2014.

During his 25 year NHS career, Andrew has held planning and operational positions across a number of NHS organisations across South Wales as well as national roles. He has particular areas of interest in improving patient safety, quality and patient experience; partnership working across Public Services; and delivering frontline services through service improvement and modernisation.

Dr Goodall has a law degree from Essex University and a PhD in Health Service Management from Cardiff Business School.

Joanne Oliver
Health Service Engagement Lead for Wales, British Heart Foundation

Joanne qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1989 specialising in cardiac nursing until 2012, latterly as a Cardiac Rehabilitation and BHF Heart Failure Specialist Nurse within Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. She successfully completed her Masters in Advanced Nurse Practice at Cardiff University and dissertation focussed on education programmes to support best practice provision within Palliative Care for Heart Failure Patients.

Since 2012 Joanne has worked in a few different roles within BHF and was appointed as BHF Health Service Engagement Lead for Wales in April 2016. The priority of this role being to lead high level engagement whilst influencing senior decision makers within NHS Wales health and social care to raise the understanding and need for prioritising evidence based care for those people at risk of or who have CVD. It is also a priority to use knowledge and field intelligence to identify current and future opportunities for CVD innovative implementation, best practice development, spread and adoption, and the co-ordination of activities to capitalise on all opportunities.

Joanne is currently the BHF co-opted BACPR Committee member, sits on the All Wales Cardiac Rehabilitation and Heart Failure Specialist Nurse Group and is the third sector representative within the All Wales Heart Conditions Implementation Board.

Victoria Norman

Victoria Norman is the founder of Signum Health. Signum Health uses AI and cloud-based technology to deliver remote health care and support within local communities.

Victoria has over 18 years experience within the health and care sector, having previously worked in roles in both Primary Care and Public health across England and Wales. Victoria launched Signum Health in 2016, developing and delivering i-navigator, a social prescribing platform. Victoria also undertook a buyout of a company in 2016, raised 3 rounds of investment and recently was part of a successful collaboration for funding through the NHS Test Bed Programme.

Rhiannon Edwards

I am a CVD specialist Nurse with over 25years experience in cardiology within surgery, medicine, research and CVD Risk assessment environments.  Roles prior to current post, include the development of a Primary Prevention screening project in the Welsh Valleys and the development of a FH service in South East Wales.

Current job description involves encouraging CVD as a priority across primary care clinical environments. Collaborating with NHS organisations strategically to consider service redesign based on shared best practice and innovation.  To deliver and promote best practice clinical care across  CVD management.

Hamish Laing
Professor of Enhanced Innovation, Engagement and Outcomes, Swansea University

Hamish is a reconstructive Plastic Surgeon and was Executive Medical Director and Chief Information Officer at ABM University Health Board (ABMU) from 2014-8. He led a cross-sectoral review of clinical and digital strategies, secured substantial investment for digital transformation and established a Value-Based Healthcare programme.

He now researches Value-Based Healthcare, develops and tests models of outcomes-based pricing for medicines and technologies that support medicines adherence; working closely with Pfizer Inc., NHS Wales and other partners. Hamish is passionate about digital inclusion and chairs the project to deploy a patient controlled health record, Patients Know Best™ in Swansea Bay University Health Board.

Amit Chandratreya
Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Prince of Wales Hospital

Mr Amit Chandratreya is a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon working at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend.

He provides a comprehensive knee service from sports injuries around the knee through to the management of arthritic conditions. He has a special interest in ligament reconstruction and joint preservation surgery.

To treat patients with innovative advance therapies and not with arthroplasty, he becamea founder active member of the UK Biological Knee Society. He also is part of a Clinical Steering Group for bracing treatment for Osteoarthritis.

Cartilage surgery and regeneration are treatments that he provides in the NHS. He is one of the signatories which helped NICE to change their guidelines on ACI (Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation). To reduce costs, he has performed Wales’ first single stage ACI surgery in the form of CartiOne.

Rob Orford
Chief Scientific Adviser for Health, Welsh Government

Rob Orford has been Chief Scientific Adviser for Health in Welsh Government since January 2017. In his current role he is responsible for providing expert professional advice on health science to Welsh Ministers and Welsh Government and is professional lead for Healthcare Science in NHS Wales. He is policy lead for Genomics, Imaging and Pathology and sponsor of the Welsh Scientific Advisory Committee.

Previously he was Group Leader and Principal Scientist at Public Health England (from 2008 to 2016). His background is in molecular biology, undertaking postdoctoral research with the Medical Research Council (2008-2002) Cancer Research UK (1999-2002). He is also a STEM Ambassador.

Keir Lewis
Professor and R&D Director, Swansea University, Respiratory Innovation Wales

Keir is Professor of Respiratory Medicine in Swansea University and a Consultant Physician and Director of Research & Development in Hywel Dda University Health Board, Wales. He is the first Medical Director of Respiratory Innovation Wales.

He is a member and has chaired various research committees and task forces for the British Thoracic and European Respiratory Societies. He is Wales Respiratory Specialty Lead on the UKCRN and advises Welsh Government, NICE and the HTA. He has guest lectured worldwide and co-authored various papers and two textbooks. He is a Chief Investigator or collaborator on several ongoing portfolio studies on the clinical and translational aspects of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and smoking cessation.

Working with the NSH, local universities, pharmaceutical and biomedical companies, he has helped attract over £15M funding and has won a NHS Wales Award (2018), MediWales Awards for Innovation & Collaboration with International Industry (2017) and their Research Award in the NHS (2018).

Annette Thomas is a Consultant Clinical Biochemist at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board with over 40 years’ experience in Laboratory Medicine, 20 years of which has been as Director of Weqas.

Annette is Director of Point of Care testing (Poct) at Cardiff and Vale UHB, and is the National clinical lead for PoCT representing Poct in Welsh Government advisory Committees and chairs the All Wales” PoCT Co-ordinators Network.

 She is the current chair of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) Committee on Analytical Quality and is a member of the European Federation in Laboratory Medicine Working Group on Performance Specifications for EQAS.

 She has previously held posts on the Executive Board of the European Committee for External Quality Assurance Programmes in Laboratory Medicine, chair of the All Wales Clinical Biochemistry Group, chair of the National Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine Audit Committee in the UK, a member of the Association of Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine Scientific Committee and a member of the Royal College of Pathologists Scientific Advisory Committee on Clinical Biochemistry.

Sian Morgan

I am a Consultant Clinical Scientist responsible for the rapidly expanding diagnostic All Wales Genetics Laboratory, and support an expert workforce of approximately 120 Clinical Scientists, Bioinformaticians and Technologists as Wales seeks to become a leader in the field of precision medicine and its associated research. I have been a  long-term member of the AWMGS workforce, working in the laboratory for 28 years. In the last few years I have overseen and lead the move to next generation sequencing (NGS) with the development and introduction of new genetic services.

Jonathan Goodfellow
National Clinical Lead, Wales Cardiac Network

Jonathan was born in Pontypridd and was educated at Pontypridd Boys Grammar and Coed-y-lan Comprehensive school. He trained at the Medical College of St Bartholomew’s Hospital qualifying in 1985. His cardiology training was in Bristol and Bath before returning to Cardiff to do research, then as Senior Registrar. In 1999 he was appointed as Senior Lecturer in Cardiology at the Wales Heart Research Institute, and also as part-time NHS cardiologist in Bridgend. In 2005 he became a full-time NHS consultant in Bridgend. He was lead cardiologist between 2005-15 during which time the department expanded significantly to provide a comprehensive echo service, pacing service and diagnostic cardiac catheter lab. In 2008 he was part of the team that won a NHS Wales award for innovations in cardiology out-patient services. He became Medical Director at Princess of Wales Hospital from 2015 to 2018. He is the immediate past-President of the Welsh Cardiovascular Society and the current Chair of the Society of Physicians in Wales.

Keith Lloyd
Head of Swansea Medical School, Swansea University

Professor Keith Lloyd is dean and head of the medical school at Swansea University. The medical school  is consistently ranked  in the UK top 5 for  the quality of its research, education and innovation.  He leads on the Health Care Technology Centre element of the  of the Life Sciences Hub Wales Accelerate programme that brings together clinical, academic, and industry expertise to roll out new, innovative products and services within the Welsh Health and Care system.  As a clinical clinical academic Prof Lloyd works as a psychiatrist in Swansea Bay University Health Board.  He is also Keith is also vice president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Robyn Davies
Head of Innovation, Cardiff and Vale UHB

Robyn’s ‘WHY’ is changing cultures to enable teams to innovate.  He currently works part time as Head of Innovation for Cardiff and Vale Health Board. He’s also part of the Cardiff Clinical Innovation Partnership and an active member of SEWAHSP.

He is also Chairman of a HR Tech software company that span out of the Alacrity Foundation. In the past he co-founded a successful international consultancy. His early career included HR director roles in international tech firms and way back in the last century he was a general manager for surgery and anaesthetic services in the Welsh NHS.

He has an Occupational Psychology degree and an Exec MBA from Cardiff University.  He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health.

Stephen Parnell

Following 20 years in the armed forces, Steve followed a career in manufacturing as an operations manager and soon became focused on implementing lean methodology to improve quality and productivity. During this time, Steve worked for some iconic British manufacturing companies such as Jacobs and Typhoo. In 2009 Stev was recruited to the Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust as head of service improvement. Steve then spent seven years in Australia as  Lean consultant working in a number of sectors. For the last four years Steve was as a member of the executive teams in two Queensland Health, Hospital & Health Services. Steve Joined Cardiff & Vale Health Board in December 2018 as Assistant Director of Improvement & Transformation.

Andrew Morris

Andrew Morris is Head of Pharmacy and Professor of Pharmacy Education at Swansea University Medical School. Previously Andrew was Dean of Science at the University of Nottingham Malaysia where he was also a member of the Management Board. This followed a 6-year tenure as Head of Pharmacy at Nottingham Malaysia – a School that he had initially helped to establish. Andrew has previously held positions in primary care pharmacy in Wales as a Community Pharmacy and Prescribing Adviser and across South Wales and England as a community pharmacist.

Paul Boyle
Vice Chancellor, Swansea University

Professor Paul Boyle has recently been appointed as Vice-Chancellor Elect at Swansea University. Prior to this he was President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester. Previously, Paul was Chief Executive of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the UK’s largest funding agency for social science research; the International Champion of Research Councils UK, with responsibility for international strategy on behalf of all seven UK research councils; and President of Science Europe, representing over 50 European funding agencies.

Paul is a Fellow of the British Academy, The Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Academy of Social Sciences, and the Royal Geographical Society of Scotland.  He is Chair of the Scottish Science Advisory Council, which is Scotland’s highest level science advisory body; a Board Member of Universities UK, who provide leadership and support to executive heads of 133 UK University institutions as well as Chair of their Research Policy Network; Vice-President of the European University Association which represents over 800 universities in 48 countries; and a Council Member and Trustee of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, which has over 500 member institutions in 37 Commonwealth countries.

Anna Sussex

Anna Sussex is the Public Health Wales National Programme Manager for Frequent Attenders, Unscheduled Care and clinical lead for WEDFAN, the Welsh Emergency Department Frequent Attenders Network

With a background in emergency nursing, she is leading on work with the Emergency Departments in Wales, in collaboration with a broad spectrum of partner agencies across statutory, non-statutory and voluntary sectors, aimed at:

• supporting patients who frequently use services including EDs, Welsh Ambulance Service, GP OOHs, Police and Fire & Rescue, so they receive personalised and sustained support in a meaningful way for them, and
• reducing demand on unscheduled services.

Anna worked as an Emergency Department Sister in Cardiff and Vale for 17yrs and was responsible for the implementation of the successful and award winning C&V Frequent Attender Service, now in its 5^thyear. The service has won 2 NHS Wales Awards for Working Seamlessly across Organisations and the Chief Medical Officers Award for Outstanding Contribution to Prudent Healthcare. Anna is also RCN Nurse of the Year for Innovation 2016

He is deputy lead of the Welsh Renal Clinical Network and a research active consultant whose PhD focussed on inflammation and immunity. He is currently chief investigator of a national study looking at the socio-demographic factors that influence shared decision making in patients with advanced kidney failure.

Adele Cahill
Assistant Director Value Based Health Care and National Lead Value Based Procurement, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board

Adele has been a senior Procurement professional for over 33 years, heading up the Procurement teams across NHS Wales.  Adele has spent time between 2010 and 2015 in other general management roles supporting Turnaround and Transformation programmes across various Welsh Health Boards, before joining Aneurin Bevan in 2016  as the Assistant Director for Value Based Health Care.

Supporting Value-Based Health Care (VBHC) as a framework to support NHS Wales to re-design for Value has been one of the key drivers over the past three years, moving this from a local initiative into one supported for scale up of outcome measurement, at a National Welsh Government level.

Adele has more recently picked up the National lead, in collaboration with the Director of Procurement NWSSP, to support the development of a system that aligns more closely with Industry using outcomes data and innovative approaches to consider a risk-sharing approach to ‘Procuring for Value’.

Kay Wilson
Early Phase Team Lead, Clinical Trials Unit, Velindre Cancer Centre

Kay Wilson is a Senior Research Nurse Lead managing the Early Phase team at Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff. Specialising in Solid Tumour early phase clinical trials. With 20 years’ experience as a registered nurse 15 of which has been in Oncology.

Kay provides leadership and management the clinical team delivering SACT early and late phase clinical trials at the Clinical Research Treatment Unit at the Cancer Centre.

Kay’s passion has advanced during her time in research supporting the then new initiative to bring early phase research to Wales, setting up a designatedearly phase research clinicand facilitating patient referrals into this clinic 8 years ago and is keen to make available Oncology phase I clinical trials and advanced therapies to patients in S.Wales and beyond.

Kay supports Research Nurses by providing mentorship and training for nurses in conjunction with Health and Care Research Wales.

Studying at Cardiff University with the School of Nursing to obtain her nurse qualification. Kay has a keen interest in Management and Leadership and has studied these at post grad level.

Jessie Powell
Senior Nurse Manager (CRF), University Hospital of Wales Cardiff

Jessie Powell is a Senior Nurse Manager who leads the Clinical Research Facility (CRF) at the University Hospital of Wales Cardiff, specialising in the delivery of early phase clinical trials.  As a registered adult nurse for the last decade, Jessie started her career in the emergency dept. before making the move into research and now has nearly seven years of experience in this area.  Jessie is responsible for the operational management and development of the Clinical Research Facility and provides leadership to nursing and administrative staff working in the facility.  Jessie is passionate about leadership and was awarded runner up in the leadership category at the 2017 Cardiff and Vale staff recognition awards.

Jessie is the primary contact person and facilitator for the safe and ethical implementation of new and existing research studies in the CRF, involving a broad range of clinical specialties, in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Guidelines, EU Clinical Trials Directive and Research Governance Framework.

Jessie gained a BN (Hons) Adult Nursing degree from Glamorgan University (now the University of South Wales) and is currently completing an MSc in Clinical Research at Cardiff University.

Alan Parker
Reader in Translational Virotherapies, Cardiff University - School of Medicine

Alan Parker is a Reader in Translational Virotherapies, based at Cardiff University School of Medicine. His group study the adenovirus, and the basic host: cell interactions that underpin cellular infection and tropism. Using this information, his team develop refined, tumour selective and clinically tractable virotherapies for translational applications in the oncology setting. Prior to relocating to Cardiff in 2013, Alan spent 7 years as a Postdoc and Royal Society of Edinburgh Personal Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow (2005-2013), and two years at King’s College London (2003-2005). Alan is a board member of the British Society for Gene and Cell Therapy (https://www.bsgct.org/), a society that seeks to educate, promote and lobby on the clinical progression of advanced gene and cell therapies for patient benefit. Within this role, his is especially focussed on promoting opportunities for Early Career Researchers (https://www.bsgct.org/its-an-ecr-life/). David Thomas

David joined ABCi in August 2018 from Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust where he worked latterly as Urgent Care Strategic Lead.  He has spent the majority of his ten-year career in the NHS to date managing offender healthcare services in a number of prisons, but has also worked with a wide range of acute and community services, including involvement in the establishment of an innovative mental health partnership service for 0-25 year olds in Birmingham. David was amongst the first cohorts to graduate from the NHS Leadership Academy’s prestigious Nye Bevan executive leadership programme in 2014.  He also completed NHS Improvement’s Quality, Service Improvement and Redesign Practitioner programme in 2017.  Prior to joining the NHS, David spent ten years in the British Army, commissioning from the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in 1999.  He holds a Masters in War Studies from King’s College, University of London, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies from the University of Worcester.

For the past 3 years he has led the Wales national lead for the global blood pressure screening campaign, May Measurement Month.   

Ian Weeks
Dean of Clinical Innovation for the School of Medicine and College of Biomedical and Life Sciences, Cardiff University School of Medicine

Ian is Dean of Clinical Innovation for the School of Medicine and College of Biomedical and Life Sciences, Cardiff University. He has undertaken research, development and manufacturing of novel biochemical diagnostic tests for human disease for over thirty years in academic, NHS and commercial environments. He has authored over 130 publications, books and patents. Technologies of which he is an inventor have been licensed and used by global companies as the basis of in vitroclinical diagnostic tests, many hundreds of millions of which are used annually worldwide. He has founded three spin-out companies and research undertaken by Ian and colleagues earned a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for the Medical School in 1998 and was also cited by Universities UK in 2006 as one of the top 100 life-changing discoveries of the past 50 years. The same technology formed the basis of tests for viral pathogens such as HIV, HCV and HBV in blood donor units resulting in the award of the US Medal of Technology in 2004. Ian is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Royal College of Pathologists and the Learned Society of Wales. He was awarded a Doctorate (PhD,1980) and a Senior Doctorate (DSc, 2009) by Cardiff University and is presently Acting Head of the Medical School.

Lisa Trigg

Prior to this, she spent seven years at the London School of Economics conducting research into social care, and specifically into quality and regulation in social care.  Much of this research involved comparing the approaches of different governments, including the systems of several European countries, as well as Australia, Japan and the United States.  Before this, Lisa spent seventeen years working in management and consulting roles in Australia and the UK, with clients from a range of sectors, including telecommunications, media, IT, financial services, utilities and the NHS.

She is motivated by creating happy, harmonious families. “Simple Parenting Skills in Minutes” is a collection of tried and tested techniques helping busy parents deal with everyday child parent struggles. She is also launching a journal to build resilience in 6 -12 year olds.

Malcolm Mason
Professor of Cancer Studies, Cardiff University

Malcolm Mason is Professor of Cancer Studies in the School of Medicine, Cardiff University, UK. He qualified from St Bartholomew’s Hospital and trained in oncology at the Royal Marsden Hospital and Institute of Cancer Research. As a clinical trialist he has played a leading role in some of the most important prostate cancer trials of the last decade, including the Intergroup NCIC/MRC PR3/PR07 study, the MRC STAMPEDE study, and the ProtecT trial. These trials have changed medical practice, and are preventing hundreds of thousands of deaths from prostate cancer per annum worldwide. He founded the Wales Cancer Bank in 2004, which was the first National cancer tissue bank in the UK, and which has now collected samples from over 15,000 patients. Although now retired from clinical practice, he continues to serve on several Trial Management Groups and Trial Development Groups. His experience as a clinical trialist led to his appointment as the Chair of the EORTC’s Independent Data Monitoring Committee which oversees all of their current trials. He also maintains a role in clinical medicine as a member of the European Association of Urology’s Prostate Cancer Guidelines Group, and as a member of the Core Group of the UICC’s TNM cancer staging programme, for which he also Chairs the Evaluation Committee. He has authored over 300 publications, and is still active as a writer, lecturer and reviewer. In 2017 he was appointed OBE in the Queen’s birthday honours for his contribution to cancer research and to the NHS.

Alison Powell
Wales Development Lead, Workflow - Practice Unbound

Alison has significant experience of working on performance management and culture change within large organisations with statutory functions. She worked closely with external consultants on an Improvement Plan within Housing in a large Local Authority, before moving to Social Care. Then through the reorganisation to Children’s Services, she worked in a performance management and service improvement role. Alison has worked with Practice Unbound for almost two years and currently focuses on building relationships across Primary Care in Wales, supporting innovation and building resilience in practices, particularly through Workflow.

Peter Ella-Tongwiis
Post graduate research scientist, North Wales Urological Research Centre

Peter is a trained and experienced Biomedical Scientist from Ghana, and is registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory technology and a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Science from the University of Chester.

He is currently successfully defended his PhD thesis and works as a research scientist at the North Wales Clinical Research Centre in Wrexham. For his PhD, Peter is investigating changes in biomarkers in Bladder Cancer patients with special focus on cancer recurrence and progression. This project specifically looks at the role of inflammatory biomarkers, as well as markers of growth and angiogenesis in bladder cancer recurrence and progression. Employing several specialist techniques such as Immunohistochemistry, electrophoresis, western blotting and ELISA, several biomarkers in patients’ blood, urine and bladder tissues are being investigated.

Steve Luzio
Operational Manager, Diabetes Research Unit Cymru

Steve Luzio holds a Personal Chair at Swansea University and is also the Operational Manager for the Diabetes Research Unit Cymru. He is a clinical scientist who has been involved in the scientific research of diabetes mainly working in clinical departments (Clinical Biochemistry, Medicine) of busy teaching hospitals and universities. Throughout his career he has been involved in the measurement and interpretation of results related to diabetes including diagnosis of diabetes, the monitoring of diabetes control and beta-cell secretory products. This has led to the establishment of a nationally accredited central laboratory in Swansea University Medical School which is important for many UK and international projects. His expertise in clinical trials, particularly for the treatment of diabetes, has led to a long association with the pharmaceutical industry and more recently with the devices and diagnostics industry both within Wales and internationally. Steve is co-author of over 150 peer-reviewed papers and over 200 meeting abstracts on a broad spectrum of aspects of diabetes including; beta-cell secretion, complications of diabetes, treatment of diabetes, the methodology of measuring insulin and proinsulin-like polypeptides.

Wendy Ingram
Clinical Lead for Paroxysmal Nocturnal Haemoglobinuria, Cardiff and Vale UHB

Dr Wendy Ingram is a Consultant Haematologist working within the South Wales Blood and Marrow Transplant Programme at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.  She has a lead role in immunotherapy and has been pivotal in setting up the clinical service to deliver advanced therapies such as CAR T cells in Wales.

She received her medical degree from the Royal London and St Bartholomew’s Medical School in 1997 and completed specialty training in Haematology at King’s College Hospital, London, where she was awarded a Leukaemia Research funded clinical research fellowship and a Biomedical Research Council Award.

Dr Ingram completed a PhD in cancer studies with the title of  ‘Immune Biology of AML’ studying the effects of AML whole cell vaccines on NK cells and regulatory T cell subsets. She set up an early Phase I, first in man study in the field of immunotherapy, gaining first hand experience in GMP/GCP and regulatory requirements including submissions to MHRA and the gene therapy advisory committee (GTAC).  Since this time she has served as principal investigator on a wide range of commercial and investigator led studies within the field of transplantation, immunotherapy and haemato-oncology. Dr Ingram is a core member of the UK MDS NCRI subgroup and a co-investigator at UHW for the UK wide haematology trials initiative the ‘Trials Acceleration Programme” and the transplant trials initiative “IMPACT”.

Claire Smith

Claire has 11 years of experience as a Biomedical Scientist working for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and has been with Roche diagnostics for over 7 years in technical and then sales roles. She gained her MSc in Cellular Pathology at Manchester Metropolitan University and is passionate about improving patient care through innovation such as personalized medicines and digital pathology. Sarah Prior
Senior Lecturer for Diabetes Research Group, Swansea University

Dr Sarah Prior is a Senior Lecturer for the Diabetes Research Group in Swansea University Medical School. She gained both her BSc in Biochemistry & Genetics and her PhD in Cancer Genetics at Swansea University, before joining the Diabetes Group in 2007 as a post-doc researcher.

Sarah is actively involved in both teaching and research, with current research interests including Type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Sarah, along with a fellow colleague, has recently developed the newly launched MSc Diabetes Practice distance learning course, which has achieved high acclaim even in its infancy, being nominated for both the DPC “Innovation” Award and the “Promoting Clinical Research and Application to Practice” NHS Wales Award.

Penny Wilson
Senior Specialist, AMR, Vaccines & Global Health, Innovate UK

As part of UK Research and Innovation, Innovate UK is the UK’s Innovation agency; its remit is to support businesses and grow the economy by stimulating innovation in science and technology. Having spent over 25 years in the Diagnostics Industry, in a variety of senior technical and strategic roles, Penny leads on a number of Innovate UK’s diagnostic related activities. In particular she is responsible for delivering a significant part of the “Data to Early Diagnosis and Precision Medicine” ISCF challenge. Appointments have included Senior Director of Advanced Technology Development for a company developing diagnostic systems for the doctor’s office, and Director of Technology Assessment and Acquisition for Siemens Healthcare. In Global Health Penny has advised the Bill & Melinda GATES Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation and the African Union.

Helen Lane
Consultant Physician Diabetes & Endocrinology/ GIM, Lead for Innovation and Multi-disciplinary Quality Improvement Teams, Cwm Taf UHB

I have been a consultant physician for the past 13 years at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, having completed my postgraduate specialist registrar training in Wales, and completing my research MD in testosterone and cardiovascular risk.

Whilst a full-time clinician, I have occupied various positions within the Health Board such as Associate Clinical Director for Medicine, Governance lead for Medicine and Assistant Medical Director. Whilst undertaking these roles, I have been building ward based multi-disciplinary Quality improvement teams with front line staff to improve the quality of care delivered; engaging all grades of all disciplines in quality improvement work. I am now fortunate enough to have a role which has enabled me to expand this work, in collaboration with 1000lives and becoming an Improvement Advisor with IHI.

In my personal life I am mother to 3 boys (one of which is testing my knowledge of hormones) and married to a husband who will probably always be building our house!

Rebecca Thomas

Having 18 years of experience within a wide variety of services, has provided her with a comprehensive, highly specialised and detailed professional knowledge. Drawing on experiences from secondary acute medicine, including respiratory, endocrinology, gastroenterology and neurological sciences.

Her Current role is as the Senior Nurse for Professional Standards and Quality Improvement. She is responsible for leading Quality(assurance and improvement) and ProfessionalNursing Standards. Integral to her role is supporting multi professional teams as they lead and develop improvements within their areas, providing the staff with the tools, techniques and support they need to improve the experience of patients, carers and service users.

She was nominated for the Innovation in Nursing Award, RCN in Wales Nurse of the Year 2014, where strong leadership and innovation excellence were highlighted as being her main strengths.

Described as having an authentic appreciation of the needs and experiences of staff delivering direct care, with high energy levels and enthusiasm for quality improvement which is extremely motivating for the staff she engages with.

Mark Briggs

Mark Briggs is currently the Head of Cell and Gene Therapy for the Welsh Blood Service and Head of Strategy for Research, Development and Innovation for the Velindre Cancer Centre, both divisions within the Velindre University NHS Trust.  He is also co-director of the Midland-Wales Advanced Therapy Treatment Centre, a UKSCF and UKRI funded grant programme with a focus upon expediting adoption of cell and gene therapies within the NHS.  Currently, Mark is also leading the early stages of set up and implementation a National Programme for Advanced Therapies as part of a Precision Medicine initiative within Wales. Prior to moving to the public sector Mark spent more than 20 years within commercial Life Sciences R&D sector, with a primary focus upon the development of enabling and disruptive technologies supporting drug discovery, development, safety testing.  In his latter corporate years, Mark had both technology scouting and programme delivery roles in the development of tools and systems for the industrialisation of advanced therapies.  This was with a view to enabling safe and robust, turn-key production of both genetically and non-genetically modified cellular therapies.

John Chester
Clinical Professor and Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology, Cardiff University & Velindre Cancer Centre

John is a clinical academic cancer researcher in the School of Medicine at Cardiff University, since September 2011.  His clinical practice, as an honorary consultant in Medical Oncology, is at the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff.  He is currently the Cancer Research Theme Lead in Cardiff University’s College of Biomedical and Life Sciences, Director of the Wales Cancer Research Centre and co-Lead for the Cardiff Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC).

John’s clinical practice and clinical trials activity has predominantly been in bladder cancer, germ cell tumours and head/neck cancers, and his laboratory research interests include virus-mediated gene therapy and molecular biomarkers of response to cancer therapy.
