Overview

Trade marks are valuable assets irrespective of the size of a business yet the importance of trade marks and the benefits of obtaining registered trade mark protection are often overlooked. The workshop will focus on the basics of trade mark law and the issues which matter in practice, and has been designed to provide companies with the knowledge required to develop and implement an effective trade mark strategy. Key areas for discussion include:

• What is a trade mark?
• The value of trade marks
• How are rights in a trade mark established?
• Do you really need to register your trade mark
• Considerations when creating or selecting a trade mark
• The importance of clearance searches using your trade marks

The workshop will also provide an overview of copyright and design rights, and discuss the interaction between trade marks and these other forms of Intellectual Property. The workshop is intended to be interactive and includes case studies to emphasise key points and promote discussion.
