Third Annual MediWales Innovation Awards

Third Annual MediWales Innovation Awards celebrate excellence in the Welsh health technology sectors.

The third Annual MediWales Innovation Awards was held at the Hilton Hotel in Cardiff on 4th November, in the presence of over 100 senior sector representatives. The Awards celebrate the achievements of the health technology sectors in Wales and provide recognition of the achievements of those companies who have excelled.

Mr Greg Baily, Chairman of MediWales and Technical Director of Cardiff based medical manufacturer Arjo Huntleigh said, “In these difficult economic times it is heartening to celebrate the numerous, albeit hard won, success stories that continue to flow from Wales’ health technology sectors and the patient benefits that will result from this work”. There are over 180 companies in the health technology sector in Wales, which include pharmaceutical, biotechnology, diagnostics and medical device manufacturers.

The Innovation Award, sponsored by Catalyst Venture Partners Ltd, recognises an innovative technology that has provided a major improvement in business performance and patient care. This year’s winner was C&G Medicare from Swansea, for their new product designed to help with female stress incontinence.

The Outstanding Growth Award for consistent, sustainable and profitable growth was sponsored by Abel & Imray- patent and trade mark attorneys; the winner was Penn Pharmaceutical Services, who combine clinical trial and drug development services with manufacturing, packaging, import and storage.

The Export Award, sponsored by UDL Intellectual Property, for maximising opportunities to exploit and develop new markets, was awarded to Bridgend based Biotec Services International. They specialise in clinical trials, supply, and specialist import services for temperature sensitive biopharmaceuticals.

The Start-up award, sponsored by PDR, was awarded to a newly established company that can demonstrate potential for a promising future. This year’s winner was Oncomorph Analysis Ltd from Aberystwyth, who are developing ground-breaking visualisation software that will assist in the diagnosis of prostate cancer.

The Partnership with the NHS award, for collaboration with the NHS that resulted in both improved business performance and benefited patient care, was sponsored by GX Design Engineers. The winner was Home Telehealth Limited (HTL) of Cardiff, for their work with the NHS in the provision of a new concept in healthcare. This resulted in HTL being used not only as an equipment supplier, but also as a service provider.

Finally, the Judges’ Award sponsored by Teamworks Technology Services, was won by Zarlink Semiconductors. They develop and supply technologies for medical device companies to deliver smaller, wireless portable therapy and monitoring devices.

This year’s sponsors were GE Healthcare, Boots Centre for Innovation, Geldards law firm and five prize sponsors. The Awards are also supported by the Welsh Assembly Government. The range of sponsors, entrants and judges, pays strong testament to the close networking and collaborative nature of the sector in Wales.
