Cardiff University Research and Commercial Division: June’s MediWales Featured Member

Cardiff University has an ‘Open for Business’ policy which aims to bring academia and business together through collaborations ranging from a few hours of consultancy or contract research to multi-million pound consortium grants involving numerous industrial and academic partners. The Research and Commercial Division (RACDV), is the business facing arm of the University’s central administration and supports business by acting as a single point of contact and intermediary to connect industry with those academics having the knowledge and expertise to help with their needs. The Business Development Team facilitates first meetings, supports the development of collaborative projects, helps gain funding and supports projects to completion.

Cardiff University has an enviable track record of productive partnership with industry. Here’s some of what we can offer:

  • Innovation Network – An ideal introduction to the University’s formidable commercial capabilities. Meet likeminded people from the business and university communities at free, informal gatherings to discuss topics such as ‘Knowledge clusters’ and ’Collaborations in China’.
  • Consultancy and Research – Plug into the University’s professional expertise in everything from assisting business with manufacturing problems to searching for new global oil reserves with multi-national companies.
  • Knowledge Transfer Partnerships – This highly successful programme can solve your strategic business problems. KTP is a Technology Strategy Board scheme which is part-funded by government. The scheme funds a recently qualified graduate to drive forward a project aimed at helping a company fulfil a strategic need. The funding includes the support of an academic who assists the graduate to transfer knowledge and embed it within the business.
  • Professional Development –A key component of any thriving organisation. The University has a deserved reputation for delivering effective, high-quality short courses or bespoke training for business.
  • Student and Graduate Recruitment – Careers Service supports local, national and international organisations in raising their profile and recruiting at Cardiff University. Receive help and expertise on a range of free and chargeable services and events to help you meet your student and graduate recruitment needs.
  • Student Resources – Take advantage of the University’s programme of graduate and student placements and projects. They gain practical work experience, you benefit from cost-effective – and committed – contributions and inputs to your business.
  • Simply Signposting – No query is too small or off-the-wall. We may have a ready answer or guidance that can be given over the phone at no charge. Or we can signpost you to other solution providers

We value our MediWales membership because it provides access to a network of innovative companies and organisations with whom we can share our knowledge and expertise to support them in improving their business. Cardiff University has a strong contingent of academics within the Medical/Biosciences research fields and MediWales helps us keep abreast of the developments within the Welsh Biotechnology and Medical industries.

We currently have links and collaborations with many MediWales members including GE Healthcare, with whom we have recently signed a joint working agreement. We aim to extend our collaborations with Welsh industry and would welcome MediWales members contacting us to discuss how Cardiff University could provide the knowledge and expertise to help develop their business or assist with their training needs.
