Kodit Database Limited, based in Ewloe, has already successfully developed enterprise class mobile solutions which are used by both Government and Corporate clients to manage their physical assets, both in terms of maintenance and traceability.

In September 2009 Kodit became involved in healthcare through a Technology Strategy Board project – DACAR – with Edinburgh Napier University, Imperial College and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. The project was to look at how patient data could be made secure in a cloud environment.

Although the project was looking towards the future “internet of things” what became apparent was that the successful implementation of any such system would depend upon the availability of the mobile applications and their acceptance by users.

Through NHS Connecting for Health Kodit were introduced to GS1, the organisation who set global standard for identification. Realising there was a requirement for all healthcare operators in England to implement a standard for patient wristbands Kodit created the CareMagic Print application which is now being installed in both NHS and private hospitals in England.

However, what was really required was a “framework” which could connect to any system storing Patient Demographic data and have a number of applications to cover all the areas where patient identification had to be verified.

Working with Dr Dafydd Thomas at Morriston Hospital in Swansea Kodit created a prototype of the framework which is currently being used to collect patient data for NEWS – Sepsis – 1000 Lives.

Having secured GS1 certification for the CareMagic Print application Kodit now plan to spend the next six months developing a complete web enabled framework which will allow users to create their own web services that can be deployed and used with any type of mobile device, be it Apple, Android or Windows based.

Further modules are in the planning stages and will be added to CareMagic when complete, as if to an APP store. These modules will be aimed not only at Hospitals but also for care in the community, residential care and sheltered accommodation.

Kodit is seeking collaboration from MediWales members who are interested in mobile services in any sector of care.
