TrakCel wins £125,000 to develop novel medical technology

A Bridgend-based company has raised £125,000 towards the development of a service for the cell therapy and regenerative medicine sectors.

TrakCel – a joint venture between clinical supplies business Biotec Services International, Swansea University spinout AwenID and pharmaceutical technology specialist Scalaris Technologies – has received £125,000 in repayable business finance from the Welsh Government.

The funding boost, which will be used to support TrakCel’s development of a new medical platform, is expected to safeguard five jobs.

TrakCel is working on software and hardware technology that is intended to help medical professionals manage data, report on and analyse the performance of complex clinical trials.

Its product tracks the transportation and temperature of medicines, and coordinates the logistics between manufacturing locations and treatment sites in real time.

Karen Winmill, chairman of TrakCel, said: “TrakCel’s launch and accelerated development can be directly linked to the Welsh Government’s commitment to the life sciences industry. Support from the Welsh Government was pivotal in taking the TrakCel platform to this hugely important stage of development.”

Economy minister Edwina Hart said: “I am pleased that Welsh Government support is helping to grow the stem cell services business and that we are seeing the development and growth of a scientific-focused regenerative medicine cluster.”
