Update from HPC Wales

HPC Wales is recognised as a key part of Wales’ Research and Innovation (R & I) infrastructure and a major component in the delivery of a ‘Digital Wales’ through enhanced connectivity. The venture is acknowledged as a major regional HPC Centre, in the UK (EPSRC), EU and globally, and is a ’first wave’ delivery partner in the UK Jisc’s HPC Brokerage Service.

To date, HPC Wales has established over 110 industry-academia collaborations, provided £550,000 to fund a number of high profile research and innovation projects, and supported 20 PhD studentships. We have also assisted over 230 enterprises, helping them to create 460 new products, processes and services, established over 140 jobs, and attracted close to £4million inward investment into Wales.

As a testament to the reputation HPC Wales has built, on 11th May the Minister for Finance and Government Business visited our Cardiff hub to celebrate the announcement that HPC Wales, with support from Bangor University, has been awarded a grant by the European Commission under the EU’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme to lead Europe’s Network of HPC Competency Centres for SMEs.

Following this impressive run of success, the University partners have made the decision to take over the management of HPC Wales as it moves into its next phase, the strategy to continue providing access to supercomputing technology and support existing and new users, to enable and enhance research and innovation to grow Wales’ economy.

Discussions are under way within the University partners on arrangements for continued access to the system for existing users and further communication on this will follow in due course

Your continued support and feedback is integral to the future development and success of Wales’ national supercomputing venture.
