Opportunities for the health and care industry to access AI experts

Two study groups on AI in Health will take place in Cardiff and Manchester in May and June 2019.

KTN, alongside the Universities of Cardiff and Manchester, is hosting two study groups enabling organisations in health and care to let some of the brightest minds in artificial intelligence (AI) work on specific challenges they are facing.

The three-day study groups will allow health and care organisations to access up to 40 UK researchers, to understand the value and insight of data through the application of AI and to allow the researchers to work on set challenges to better understand potential R&D avenues.

In recent years there has been a huge surge in interest in AI for health and care.  There is government support with the Prime Minister in a recent speech on the Industrial Strategy stating: “The UK will use data, AI and innovation to transform the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart disease and dementia by 2030.”

There are big commercial opportunities in public health, vaccination, medicine discovery and manufacture, mental health services and medical technology for monitoring lifestyle and behaviour.

Key to developing a successful AI in health and care eco-system is providing tangible examples of the successful application of AI, detailing the techniques, successes and limitations on real data.

The two study groups will be held in May/June 2019 at the University of Cardiff and the University of Manchester, with dates to be finalised.

At this stage, KTN is looking for organisations in health and care sector who are interested in taking part in these study groups to submit ½ page document covering:

  • Organisation details
  • Area of health and care the organisation operates in
  • Challenge details
  • How tacking the challenge could help the organisation
  • What data would be required and if you own/can access the data (Challenges and data will be openly shared with the participating researchers, so it is important that any sensitivities or confidentialities are resolved prior to the group.  It is also important that any approaches trialled by the researchers should be open to all.)
This unique opportunity is free for UK companies, with organising parties covering accommodation and meals.

Please send challenge submissions to Matt Butchers (matt.butchers@ktn-uk.org) by Friday 2 November 2018.
