You can apply now for Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Doctoral Training Partnership for Wales (Wales DTP) PhD studentships at Cardiff University’s School of Social Sciences. Health and Care Research Wales has collaboratively funded four of the studentships in social policy and social care.
The studentships, known as collaborative studentships, involve liaison with a non-academic organisation, often at many key stages of the research programme. They will commence in October 2019.

Supporting women at risk of repeat pregnancy and recurrent care proceedings: A mixed methods study of Reflect services in Wales
The successful candidate will undertake a study of Reflect services in Wales, which are services designed to support women who have experienced the permanent and compulsory removal of a child from their care, and who are at risk of repeat pregnancy and recurrent care proceedings.
The evidence base related to services of this type is under-developed and the proposed research will provide valuable insights regarding needs, delivery and outcomes. It is anticipated the study will employ a mixed methods design, incorporating analysis of regional data sets and ethnographic fieldwork.
Making the move: Understanding the transition of young people with social care needs from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to adult services
Using a mixed methods approach this studentship will explore the transition of young people with social care needs from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to adult services.
CAMHS find themselves in a period of unprecedented demand, a demand that will likely be transitioned to adulthood. Transitioning from CAMHS to Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) is generally acknowledged to be a complex process with many young people often failing to qualify for support as adults.
Prevention of mental health deterioration during the transition from statutory care to independence
The successful candidate will evaluate what works to support the mental health of young people leaving statutory care. We anticipate that you will use a mixed methods realist approach to co-produce theory with care leavers, social workers and policy-makers to explore what it is that works to support care leaver mental health.
You will conduct a rapid realist systematic review and case studies of models of transition in Wales. Case studies will involve interviews with care leavers, social workers and other relevant practitioners, and policy-makers.
ESRC Wales DTP Collaborative Award in Language and Communication Research: Understanding the linguistic, pragmatic and relational determinants of effective communication in dementia care in Wales
The aim of the project is to develop and evaluate linguistically-based communication training for carers of people with dementia in Wales. The topic and basic parameters are stipulated, though the precise details of the design will be decided jointly by the student, supervisor and collaborating partner, Six Degrees.
