Research Development Infrastructure Funding Call 2019

Health and Care Research Wales is pleased to announce the Research Development Infrastructure Funding Call 2019.

We wish to invite all high quality research groups who have identified an infrastructure resource gap and feel they meet the requirements of this call to apply for funding.

The Infrastructure funding call is competitive, but open only to individuals and research teams based in organisations in Wales. Applications are welcome from both currently funded and new groups.

Overview of research development infrastructure funding and key features of the call

Health and Care Research Wales research development Infrastructure funding provides groups of demonstrable excellence with the capacity and capability they need to grow and promote a research portfolio of clear research significance and public and patient benefit.

The funding is facilitative or platform building in nature – that is, it helps researchers to develop the capacity, capability, ideas and opportunities needed to win external grant funding and actively promote their work.

Applicants must make a strong case for the resources requested, clearly articulating an identified resource gap in an area of both research and public need, and with a clear vision of the benefits they expect to deliver. Assessment will include convincing an expert External Review Group of their ability to manage the resource and deliver their proposed work programme effectively.

Health and Care Research Wales intends to offer grant awards of up to five years from April 2020 to March 2025. Grant awards are made subject to satisfactory progress and the ongoing availability of funds.

Please see the application guidance document at the link below for full requirements.

Application assessment and funding outcome

Applications will initially undergo remit and competitiveness checks by an internal Health and Care Research Wales (Welsh Government) team. If a large number of applications are received, an initial assessment will be undertaken by a specially convened Welsh Government-led panel. Only the most competitive applications showing the strongest alignment with Welsh Government policy and strategy will progress.

All applications passing initial assessment will be sent for expert external peer review. Peer review will be used to help the External Review Group assess the applications and make funding recommendations to Health and Care Research Wales. Applicants may be interviewed by the External Review Group as part of the assessment process.

A period of discussion and iteration may be required between External Review Group assessment, agreement of the final award and issuing of a Funding Award letter.
