Pelican Feminine Healthcare invests in sterilisation unit

Cardiff-based Pelican Feminine Healthcare has invested in a new sterilisation unit, said to be the first of its kind in Wales.

The £400,000 investment means Pelican can not only manufacture medical instruments at its Cardiff site, but sterilise them as well, making it one of the few companies in the UK capable of doing so.

The company, which produces single-use medical instruments for gynaecology and obstetrics, said the new unit was a key component in its growth.

The sterilisation unit can handle any product within the women’s health sector, including those with electrical components, and will have about 5.25 million medical instruments pass through it every year.

Richard Carter, Managing Director of Pelican Feminine Healthcare, said: “We currently send three truck loads per two weeks to Derby with our products on in order to get them sterilised. Being able to do everything in-house is clearly far more beneficial, saves a huge amount of time and lowers our carbon footprint dramatically, which is very important. We expect to get payback on our investment in under two and a half years and are delighted with our new capabilities. It’s a big statement from us as a company and means exciting times are ahead.”
