Triteq contributes to space age technology which could revolutionise cosmetic and aesthetic surgery

A newly developed plasma pen could revolutionise cosmetic and aesthetic surgery.

Designed by product design consultancy Triteq Ltd for early stage company Fourth State Medicine Ltd, the pen will transform surgical procedures into non-invasive treatments, to be launched mid-2017.

First used by NASA, gas plasma sterilisation isn’t new to the healthcare sector. However, the plasma pen uses a new technological concept; combining different mechanics of plasma to achieve a better therapeutic effect. Plasma technology renders skin treatment in a non-invasive way and helps to dramatically reduce scars. It also helps to improve wound healing without the risk of infection or the need for drugs in a wide range of cases, such as diabetic ulcers and bed sores. With over 50,000 people in the UK undergoing cosmetic surgery every year, the possibilities of using this revolutionary technology are endless.

Product design consultancy Triteq Ltd has been helping Fourth State Medicine with a step by step process in developing a hand held plasma pen prototype. Triteq has extensive experience of designing products covering a wide range of applications, from safety critical medical devices to consumer products. One of the major product design challenges Triteq faced was that the device generates multiple types of plasma, and each in turn requires a different power supply to work. Both were successfully incorporated into the device. Another challenge was a specific regulatory requirement for electrical safety; namely the maximum leakage current that is approved for medical devices. Clever electronics design ensured the leakage current is down to the required level.

Dr. Thomas Frame, Founder of Fourth State Medicine, said: “We will be a world-leading technology provider and developer of solutions based on our revolutionary proprietary plasma based platform technology. This will offer new treatments, therapies and solutions responding to the demands and needs of our customers in well-defined and growing markets in the cosmetic, wound care, food, veterinary and sterilisation sectors.”
