Alesi Surgical showcases UK healthcare innovation in Texas

A spin-out medical device company from a leading surgical training institute at Cardiff University is one of 12 UK companies representing the country’s health and life science industry in Texas next week (15th to 21st October 2016).

Alesi Surgical, developer of the revolutionary Ultravision system, which manages surgical smoke during laparoscopic keyhole surgery, will form part of a delegation consisting of innovative medical device companies.

Ultravision is the first system in the world that offers surgeons visual clarity during minimally invasive surgery (MIS) by preventing the release of smoke in the operating theatre without the need for gas filtration. At the same time it minimises the amount of cold, dry carbon dioxide that a patient is exposed to, which reduces the risk of known side effects such as hypothermia, pain and accidental tissue damage.  The product is available in Europe and the regulatory submission under review by the US FDA.

As part of the week-long visit, the group will meet with hospital groups and clinical leaders in Texas with the aim of fostering new relationships between the UK and Texas. It also aims to bring cutting-edge British medical technologies like Ultravision to Texan clinicians and patients.

Without having to cross the Atlantic, Texas’ medical centres will be able to learn about UK healthcare innovations and practices and see how Britain’s latest technologies improve patient care.

The UK’s medical technology industry body, the Association of British Healthcare Industries (ABHI) and the UK’s Department for International Trade (DIT) have arranged the visit. The UK delegation is excited to find out more about Texas world-class hospitals and medical centres, which contain such strength and depth in the health and life sciences sectors. They are keen to collaborate and foster new relationships with Texas. The visit is part of a longer term programme of engagement.

Speaking about the visit, Dominic Griffiths, Alesi Surgical’s Managing Director, said: “Texas is well known for its high quality healthcare system.  This is a rare and valuable opportunity to visit a wide range of flagship surgical centres as part of the ABHI delegation.“

Phillip Kennedy, ABHI’s Chairman added:“The United Kingdom has an incredible depth and breadth of expertise across the life sciences and healthcare industries. Leading British businesses are bringing solutions to healthcare challenges that will transform the way that care is provided in the future and have the power to radically improve outcomes for patients.”

From the ground-breaking invention of hip replacement treatment and the use of ultrasound in modern medicine, to the development of the CT scanner and development of the first multi-articulated prosthetic hand, Britain has a well-deserved international reputation for turning innovative ideas into pioneering medical breakthroughs. Renowned for its creativity, research, and outstanding talent, Britain is travelling to Texas, to share, learn and find new partners.
