Cardiff Met to open school of technologies

Cardiff Metropolitan University has revealed plans to develop a school of technologies on a new campus in the Cardiff centre.

The school will offer courses in digital media, data science, and design technologies and could welcome its first students in 2020.

About 2,000 students could attend the school, with proposals also including the relocation of the current Cardiff School of Education from the university’s Cyncoed campus.

Professor Cara Aitchison, Cardiff Metropolitan’s president and vice-chancellor, said: “This new proposal has been developed following extensive research and consultation, and will have significant impact on the economy of the Cardiff Capital Region.

“The proposed new school is focussed on education, research, innovation and higher-level skills in digital media, data science, and design technologies.

“These are key sectors of national and international student demand, which will lead to highly paid graduate-level employment, and have been identified as having significant growth potential in South-East Wales, the UK, and internationally.”

The university will also partner with other businesses and institutions, with Cardiff and Vale College the first of these to be announced.
