Do you want to be a future research leader?

Welsh Crucible:
Developing future research leaders for Wales

What is Welsh Crucible?

Funded by the St David’s Day Group of research universities (Aberystwyth Uni, Bangor Uni, Cardiff Uni, University of Glamorgan and Swansea Uni) and the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales, Welsh Crucible offers the opportunity for all researchers in Wales to explore how they can work across institutional and disciplinary boundaries to tackle the research challenges that Wales currently faces.

Welsh Crucible aims to build a network of talented researchers who are committed to supporting the development of research-inspired collaborative innovation.

Welsh Crucible is designed for talented early- to mid-career researchers employed in Welsh universities, business, industry, charities or public sector organisations.

The Welsh Crucible Programme

Welsh Crucible comprises three two-day residential events called ‘Labs’. Each lab is structured around a programme of inspiring guest speakers, skills development sessions, group exercise and informal discussions.
The programme helps participants to discover:

  • how other early- to mid-career researchers in other disciplines are tackling the same issues as them;
  • how they can transfer their knowledge to the public sphere to make an impact;
  • the skills and attitudes that are likely to make their research more innovative;
  • how thinking creatively can make a difference to their work and career
