Finance Wales’ award-winning portfolio sweeps the board at MediWales Awards
Finance Wales’ portfolio companies won five of six industry awards at the 6th MediWales Awards hosted at Cardiff’s Hilton Hotel. The prestigious awards recognise excellence in the life sciences industry.
“Finance Wales is committed to investing in innovative companies and it’s a real pleasure to see so many of our portfolio companies winning awards this year. MediWales’ awards are highly regarded in the life sciences sector,” explained Steve Smith, early stage investments director at Finance Wales.
Outstanding Growth Award
Biotec Services International was recognised for its consistent, sustainable and profitable growth, winning MediWales’ Outstanding Growth Award. Two investment rounds totalling £900,000 enabled Biotec to target new international markets, extending its clinical supplies service to Asia, Israel and the US.
Industry Judge’s Award
Calon Cardio Technology received the Industry Judges’ Award for its potentially world-leading heart failure treatment. Finance Wales and Longbow Capital invested £1 million in Calon-Cardio Technology’s low-cost, minimally-invasive blood pumps.

Industry Export Award
Chromogenex won the Industry Export Award for the second year running after focusing on a strategy of innovation and export-led growth. The Llanelli-based company manufactures and sells laser and light technology systems for cosmetic and medical treatments. Chromogenex used our £1.2 million investment to target key strategic and emerging markets, including the USA, South Africa, Europe and Asia.

NHS Partnership with Industry Award
The NHS Partnership with Industry Award went to Flexicare Medical for its collaboration in developing and designing the Hall Lock, which prevents patients from receiving drugs incorrectly. Finance Wales has invested a total £550,000 over three funding rounds.

Start-Up Award
Denbighshire-based Microvisk Technologies won the Start-Up Award for developing its CoagMax blood testing instrument. Finance Wales first invested in Microvisk in 2009. In 2010, the company raised over £8 million from Finance Wales and a strong consortium of co-investors.
