KESS PhD Studentship: Digitising Nurse-led Medicines Monitoring Profiles – Deadline 31st October

Dr Susan Jordan and Swansea University are looking to recruit a KESS funded PhD student to work on the development of the mental health medicine adverse reaction scoring paper tool which is currently used by community nurses. The project aims to show the health and cost benefits to the mental health patient group by integrating with patient record systems.

The project will digitise a paper-based health monitoring instrument, test reliability and validity, and obtain service users’ views before exploring integration with NHS electronic systems.

The project will:

  • Review the literature on ADR6 monitoring and electronic devices.
  • Digitise the paper profile on a mobile platform with business intelligence and ability to save and transfer data to a secure server.
  • Evaluate and refine the platform through: cognitive interviews with intended users, nurses, service users, and pharmacists; inter-rater and test-retest reliability7.
  • Demonstrate reporting of findings and audits.
  • Pilot introduction of the platform into NHS electronic systems, working with Community Care Information Solutions for Wales (CCIS), evaluating patient outcomes using routine data.
  • Interview staff and service users regarding costs, benefits and barriers to using the electronic profile.
  • Integrate the profile with electronic medical records systems in primary care, including SAIL, and explore the potential for SAIL to generate combined reports of prescriptions and adverse drug reactions.
  • Develop methods to integrate the profile with secondary care record systems, including community mental health teams.
  • Scholarships are collaborative awards with external partners including SME’s and micro companies, as well as public and third sector organisations. The scholarship provides 3 years funding with a 6 month period to complete the thesis. The achievement of a postgraduate skills development award (PSDA), is compulsory for each KESS 2 scholar and is based on a 60 credit award.

Closing date: 31st October 2015
