In Wales, the Wales Gene Park works in partnership with Genetic Alliance UK . Genetic Alliance UK is an alliance of over 130 support groups, charities and families affected by genetic conditions. Genetic Alliance UK brings its member groups and families from across Wales closer to the Gene Park’s work and involves them in its developments, giving families the opportunity to engage in policy developments. In this role you will be responsible for generating and communicating a patient/family viewpoint on policy and practice relating to the development of genetics in health care in Wales. Applicants should have appreciation of science/scientific methods in the biosciences and healthcare and knowledge of political processes, with particular emphasis to the National Assembly of Wales and the Welsh Government.

This is a full-time position that is fixed-term until 30th March 2015

Salary: £30,122 – £35,938 per annum (Grade 6)

Job Description

To promote awareness of the needs of families living with genetic disorders for services and support which are appropriate, user friendly and which reflect current scientific undertaking and best clinical practice.

To bring together representatives of charities, support groups and other voluntary bodies to inform the debate about scientific and healthcare developments from the perspective of those living with genetic disease in Wales.

To inform the political and professional discussions in Wales about the services and resources needed to provide high quality health services for genetic conditions.

To act as the liaison and focal point for interaction between Genetic Alliance UK (UK) office and the Welsh issues, ensuring coherence and continuity of policy and practice as far as possible.

To interact with academic, clinical and education professionals within the Wales Gene Park to promote awareness and understanding of the role played by genetics and genetic research in human health and disease.

To contribute to the development of Genetic Alliance UK across the UK and to the promotion of broad based awareness of its mission and purpose in the promotion of research and the development of appropriate products and services which meet the needs of those affected by or at risk from conditions in which genetic factors have a part to play.

To undertake any other duties that may be required commensurate with the grade.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

1. Ability to work on own initiative
2. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
3. Ability to master complex issues and to communicate them to diverse audiences effectively
4. Ability to empathise with those affected by or at risk of genetic conditions and be politically sensitive
5. Appreciation of science/scientific methods in the biosciences and healthcare.
6. Knowledge of political processes, with particular emphasis to the National Assembly of Wales and the Welsh Government
7. BSc or equivalent levels of experience
8. Experience of policy development, public affairs, campaigning and lobbying
9. A commitment to the aims and values of Genetic Alliance UK and their attainment

Desirable Criteria

10. Relevant professional qualification in community development / healthcare or equivalent
11. Knowledge of the current issues in human genetics and their social, ethical and legal consequences.

 

WELSH ASSEMBLY GOVERNMENT

The Welsh Government has committed £50 million to the Sêr Cymru programme to attract world-leading scientists to Wales and to support the establishment
of collaborative National Research Networks in three ‘Grand Challenge’ research areas:

The Opportunities

  • World-leading researchers, or Welsh universities, for prestigious Research Chairs with possibility of additional funding for staff and equipment costs
  • Welsh research institutions to set-up National Research Networks that will grow and shape the future direction of research in Wales
  • High calibre individuals to become Network Directors to lead the National Research Networks and support research excellence in Wales
