Proton Partners International granted formal approval to begin treatment in Wales

Proton Partners International has been granted formal technical and regulatory approval from Healthcare Inspectorate Wales to begin treating patients with proton beam therapy at its Rutherford Cancer Centre in Wales.

The independent inspectorate and regulator of healthcare in Wales visited the centre earlier this month, which will bring the most advanced treatments in cancer care to South Wales using innovative proton beam therapy. Approval was granted today following stringent checks and was the final point required ahead of the first patient being treated with high energy proton beam therapy in early April.

Proton Partners International Ltd opened its landmark Rutherford Cancer Centre in Newport earlier this year. The centre brings the most advanced treatments in cancer care to South Wales, including high energy proton beam therapy which is estimated by Proton Partners as being of benefit to around 10% of cancer patients throughout the UK.

Mike Moran, chief executive officer of Proton Partners International, said: “We are delighted that Healthcare Inspectorate Wales has approved the UK’s first high energy proton beam therapy system at our Rutherford Cancer Centre in Newport. This will lead the way for the first patient to be treated at the centre next month, and we are proud to be spearheading the introduction of this innovative cancer treatment within the UK.

“For us, this is the first step in ensuring that UK patients who need proton beam therapy do not need to travel abroad to receive treatment – something which is all the more important with cancer rates continuing to rise, and with research indicating that proton therapy has significantly lower side effects than traditional cancer treatments.”

The Rutherford Cancer Centres offer all-encompassing cancer services, including high energy proton beam therapy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, imaging and wellbeing services.

Treatment at the Rutherford Cancer Centre South Wales will be available to medically-insured private patients, self-paying patients and referrals by NHS Wales.
