Stratified Medicine Innovation Platform Roadmap: Developing a roadmap to accelerate the development and uptake of Stratified Medicine in the UK

The Technology Strategy Board (TSB) Stratified Medicine Innovation Platform is running two roadmapping workshops on 24th May and 9th June 2011 to develop a national roadmap to accelerate the development and uptake of Stratified Medicine in the UK.  Over the past three years TSB has invested around £750 million of public funds in various targeted technology areas.

In October 2010 the Technology Strategy Board launched an Innovation Platform in Stratified Medicine, to help accelerate the rate of development and uptake of stratified medicines in the UK, for the benefit of patients, healthcare providers and business. The Innovation Platform is a partnership of seven public/charity sector organisations who have agreed to work together and combine resources to accelerate research, development and, ultimately, uptake of stratified medicines in the UK. The partners are Technology Strategy Board, Medical Research Council, Department of Health England, Scottish Executive Health Directorate, Cancer Research UK (CRUK), Arthritis Research UK and the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).

The vision of the innovation platform is to make the UK a leader in the development and adoption of Stratified Medicine and to provide UK companies with a launch pad to larger worldwide markets.  Public investments in Innovation Platform activities of around £75 million are expected over the next five years; along with matched funding from industry the total investment will be in the order of £150 million.  The first three Collaborative R&D competitions investing up to £11 million were launched in Jan 2011 with successful programmes being funded from Q2 2011.

The TSB and partners now intend to hold two technology roadmapping workshops with key stakeholders to build a roadmap for the UK and to help guide investment activities from the Stratified Medicine Innovation Platform and other programmes.

The Stratified Medicine roadmap will be based on the views of a range of experts from industry, academia and the public sector and will play a significant part in informing the future programme for the Innovation Platforms. Output from the workshops will be on a non-attributable basis, although, with permission, participants (and their organisation) will be credited.  Summary roadmaps may be published, after circulation around the participants.

The workshops are being facilitated by the Institute for Manufacturing  (part of the University of Cambridge), with support of the HealthTech and Medicines KTN, and will be held at BIS conference Centre 1 Victoria Street London starting at 9:30am for 10:00 am and finishing at 4:30pm on 24th May and 9th June.

Involvement in the workshop is restricted, but the TSB are are keen to identify people and organisations that might be able to help influence the future direction of research and investment in this vital area.

Please register your interest with sarah.forson@healthktn.org and TSB will notify you if they have been able to fit you into the meetings.  Even if you are unable to attend, information on the roadmap following the meetings, will be available through the Stratified Medicines Official Group of the KTN.
