UK HealthTech Conference – Health and Wealth

The first of many, MediWales’ UK HealthTech Conference – Health and Wealth took place on 11th December in Cardiff’s City Hall.

The latest annual instalment of UK Government’s Department for Business Innovation and Skills’ (BIS) Strength and Opportunity Report was officially launched at the event, which gives a thorough look at the landscape of the UK medical technology, medical biotechnology, industrial biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors. A collaborative event, MediWales has partnered with Welsh Government, the Association of British Healthcare Industries, Medilink UK, the HealthTech and Medicines Knowledge Transfer Network, One Nucleus, UK Trade and Investment, and the UK Lifescience Industry magazine to develop the conference.

The day consisted of presentations, seminars and plenary sessions, with the programme including Baroness Ilora Finlay, Mirella Marlow from NICE, Michael Kreuzer OBE from the Association of British Healthcare Industries, and Helen Kuhlman from the Technology Strategy Board, as well as speakers from Johnson & Johnson, Fusion IP, Excalibur, HealthTech and Medicines KTN, UK Trade and Investment, The Scottish Centre for Telehealth and Telecare NHS 24, and Finance Wales.

The plenary session had three key sections: technology and innovation adoption, novel technologies and healthcare trends, and finishes with the funding and investment panel. In the session before lunch, three seminars looked at: medical device regulation and the future – led by the Association of British Healthcare Industries; and government support – one seminar will be led by the Welsh Government, the other by UK Trade and Investment, detailing the opportunities for international development.

The afternoon’s seminars focused on the Technology Strategy Board’s (TSB) Biocatalyst Fund; and accessing clinical expertise from the National Institute for Social Care and Health Research’s – Academic Health Science Collaboration.
